Altona Gators is the Representative Basketball Club of Altona Bay Basketball Association that develops our local Junior and Senior players and Coaches. Our program provides opportunities for athletes to develop not only as basketballers but also as people in safe and inclusive environment and our Club is regarded as a premier basketball club in Victorian Basketball boasting 36 Junior VJBL teams and 4 Senior BIG V teams.

We have consistently set a standard of excellence in the growth of our young athletes as our Junior teams compete in the very prestigious Victorian Junior Basketball League and our Senior teams compete in the BIG V League Competition  against teams throughout Victoria. We also run a wide array of development programs and provide holistic development for our athletes throughout our Resilience and Wellbeing Program.

Altona Gators has been the catalyst for talented athletes who currently play overseas in the American College system, represent Victoria and recent participants on the 2018 Australian Gems and 2016 Australian Opals Olympic teams.

Our home at the Altona Sports Centre, affectionately known as “The Swamp”, currently attract approximately 400,000 visitors per year with our 10 Court Stadium after a further four courts were added in 2021. With the expansion of our Stadium, we anticipate great growth in our program and basketball played in the Altona & Hobsons Bay Community.

The Altona Gators are led by Director of Coaching, Randy Shanklin who has over 40 years of playing and coaching experience in the United States, Denmark, and Australia. Randy Shanklin is also a Basketball Victoria High Performance Coach Hub Coach and Head of Basketball at Scotch College and is also a four-time winner of the BIG V Coach of the Year Award.

Randy is extremely passionate about developing young athletes and instilling them with confidence to reach their full potential. Randy is currently the Head Coach of our Gators BIG V Senior Division 1 Women’s Team and Gators VJBL Under 14-1 Girls and Under 18-1 Girl’s Championship Teams. 

We are very fortunate to have myriad of talented coaches leading both our Junior and Senior teams and as a club, we are committed to providing development opportunities to our coaches. We are extremely grateful to the time and effort our coaches give to ensure the continued development of our players.
