Hi Gatorโs Family,
Our High Performance Camps are back for the June School Holidays.
The Altona Gators High Performance Camps are elite professional instruction sessions that aim to help athletes develop trust, self-esteem as well as a competitive advantage. Athletes will benefit from each camp on their own, but there is a greater opportunity for growth in the areas of skill development, basketball IQ and perseverance should the athlete attend all three camps. The camps are layered to improve skills, strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities.
The camps will be facilitated by Randy Shanklin and other experienced Gators coaches. Randy has over 40 years of playing and coaching experience. In addition to his important roles at Altona as Director of Coaching, our Senior Womenโs Head Coach, he is also a Basketball Victoria High Performance Coach Hub Coach, Head of Basketball at Scotch College and Menโs Coach at La Trobe University in the University Basketball League.
Each camp will cover an important facet of basketball as follows:
Small-Sided Games:
This camp is important for athletes looking to improve on how to learn apply skills in a competitive environment. Small sided games specifically reinforce the major skills of dribbling, passing, shooting and defence to increase athletes basketball IQ and the ability to create more time and space in 5 v 5 game settings.
Individual Offence (Ball Handling & Finishing):
This camp is important for athletes of all sizes and positions. As the game has moved more towards being position-less basketball, every player on the court is in need of multiple skills and none have become more important than ball handling and finishing around the basket. These two skills, when applied at the proper time, can see players take their game to impressive heights.
Shooting & Scoring:
This camp focuses primarily on the athleteโs ability to shoot and score the basketball in a variety of areas from beyond the key. Footwork and shooting technique is the microcosm of the camp to assist in shooting consistently and maintaining proper balance. The overall aim of the camp is to teach the athletes to execute fundamentally sound shooting mechanics. While there is no quick fix for shooting, the camp will teach the importance of repetition and focus on technique.
